چکیده

All-optical magnetization switching has been studied extensively in recent years. A typical form of non-thermal magnetization control is the inverse Faraday effect (IFE). It involves rotation of the linear polarization of a probe pulse induced by a circularly polarized pump pulse in a transparent medium. Spin precession accompanied by the IFE has been reported by Kimel et al. in iron compounds . Spin precession is also observed with a linearly polarized pump pulse, in particular, a pulse polarized in a direction nonparallel to the crystal axes. This phenomenon is called the inverse Cotton-Mouton effect . The IFE has also been observed even in pure antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO with no net magnetic moment in the ground state . The resonance frequencies of AFM materials reach the terahertz range, which is several orders of magnitude higher than that of FM materials. For that reason, AFM materials attract much attention in the context of ultrafast spin control. However, the mechanism of the observed spin oscillation by circularly polarized pulses remains unclear because of birefringence in the material. Here we discuss detailed mechanism using an NiO single domain which is optically isotropic . Moreover, we report on the observation of coherent spin oscillations in AFM CoO in a pump-probe experiment. The orbital momentum of the Co ion is not fully quenched by the crystalline field. We show that spin-orbit interaction as well as exchange interaction plays an important role for low-lying magnetic excitation . This work has been performed in collaboration with R. Iida, K. Orbital Angular Momentum in Chiral Quark Model

We developed a new and unified scheme for describing both quark spin and orbital angular momenta in symmetry-breaking chiral quark model. The loss of quark spin in the chiral splitting processes is compensated by the gain of the orbital angular momentum carried by quarks and antiquarks. The sum of both spin and orbital angular momenta carried by quarks and antiquarks is 1/2. The analytic and nu...

Rotation of Electromagnetic Fields and the Nature of Optical Angular Momentum

The association of spin and orbital angular momenta of light with its polarization and helical phase fronts is now well established. The problems in linking this with electromagnetic theory, as expressed in Maxwell's equations, are rather less well known. We present a simple analysis of the problems involved in defining spin and orbital angular momenta for electromagnetic fields and discuss som...

Evolution, probabilistic interpretation and decoupling of orbital and total angular momenta in nucleon

The leading order evolution of parton orbital angular momenta is treated in the probabilistic manner. As a result, the splitting probability matrix, while coinciding with the recent explicit calculations, is expressed in the terms of the standard spin-dependent and spin-averaged kernels. The implied relations between spin and orbital angular momenta evolution kernels may be interpreted as resul...

Entanglement of internal and external angular momenta of a single atom

We consider the exchange of spin and orbital angular momenta between a circularly polarized Laguerre–Gaussian beam of light and a single atom trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential. The radiation field is treated classically but the atomic centre-of-mass motion is quantized. The internal levels in the atom are taken to be Rydberg circular states. The spin and orbital angular momenta of...

Spatio-temporal coherence mapping of few-cycle vortex pulses

Light carrying an orbital angular momentum (OAM) displays an optical phase front rotating in space and time and a vanishing intensity, a so-called vortex, in the center. Beyond continuous-wave vortex beams, optical pulses with a finite OAM are important for many areas of science and technology, ranging from the selective manipulation and excitation of matter to telecommunications. Generation of...
